Shaft Construction Supervisor
Job Description:
1. Role Purpose
To supervise and coordinate all shaft construction, timbering, and support activities to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant development of underground shaft infrastructure.
2. Key Responsibilities
Operational Supervision
- Oversee shaft timbering, lining, support installation, and related construction tasks
- Allocate tasks to Timbermen, Artisans, and underground crews
- Ensure correct use of tools, materials, and equipment
- Monitor progress and ensure adherence to engineering specifications
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce mine safety standards, statutory regulations, and safe work procedures
- Conduct daily workplace inspections and risk assessments
- Lead safety talks, toolbox meetings, and incident reporting
- Ensure proper installation of ground support and shaft reinforcement
Technical & Quality Control
- Interpret engineering drawings and shaft construction plans
- Verify quality of timbering, support, and construction work
- Identify structural risks and recommend corrective actions
- Maintain accurate shift logs, reports, and construction records
Team Leadership
- Supervise and mentor Timbermen and underground support crews
- Manage contractor performance where applicable
- Promote teamwork, discipline, and high performance
3. Qualifications & Experience
- A mining related qualification
- Class 1 or Class 2 Timberman Certificate (mandatory)
- Full Blasting Licence
- First Aid Certificate (preferred)
- Minimum 5 years underground mining experience, including shaft construction
- Minimum 2 years supervisory experience in underground operations
4. Competencies
- Strong knowledge of shaft sinking, timbering, and support systems
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
- Excellent leadership and communication skills
- High attention to safety and regulatory compliance

- Physically fit for underground work
